The GSG G14 is a G36-ish gun, but nicer. Basically ARES decided that the G36 was fine, but wanted…more. So they’ve given you more! Adjustable stock, improved ergonomics, Gearbox Control System, MOSFET, 2 round burst and, well…more!
Although inspired by the G36, the G14 is not a replica of any real world gun. Manufactured by ARES for German Sports Guns, it comes in Black or Tan. This particular version is the black model. The main body is black, whilst select markings are the usual H&K red & white, and the physical selector (along with flash hider, barrel, bolt etc) are charcoal grey.
One of the most notable features of the G14 is the GCS (Gearbox Control System), which gives superior trigger response and performance than most guns out there. This is accentuated by the active feedback of the electric blowback. Though I wouldn’t go as far as to say “recoil” it is…nice. If pushed for a comparison, it feels like a gas pistol running out of gas…so you feel the movement, but it’s not something you’re fighting to hold on target!
Many people laud the G14 becuase of its two round burst feature, and it is definitely worth it! Controlled bursts to pick off the OpFor and ensuring they feel the hit!
But it doesn’t stop there, the list of features continues! You also have a quick spring change system; remove the body pins for the stock, undo the flat head screw & voila – you can fine tune your gun for different times of the year. Similarly it travels well – in other jurisdictions with higher power limits, you can increase your spring strength to suit. Please note that increasing the power of an airsoft gun in the Republic of Ireland to >1 joule is an offence.
The battery is held in the handguard of the rifle, and is easily accessed just as you would in a G36; pop out the handguard pin & slide the handguard off. There is more space than in a traditional G36, however please note that due to the MOSFET you cannot leave a battery connected overnight; it will drain the battery! Whenever the gun is not in use, disconnect your batteries to get the longest lifespan out of them.
Overall this is something different – it’s not another M4, and it handles superbly. Performance is great, and with a wheel-based hop up chamber dialling in adjustments is a dream.
